Biography

Moïra Cristescu is a fashion designer fascinated with the body : this subject of research has always been haunting her and this obsession is probably what led her to fashion in the first place, the applied art using the body as medium.

She has proven a complete designer, expressing herself through both 2 and 3D, as she researches, sketches, develops, drapes, sews the final pieces and illustrates them.

After a fashion degree at La Martinière-Diderot in Lyon and a sculpture workshop in Sicily, she entered the prestigious Central Saint Martins in London. Her final collection got praised by the press, shortlisted by Vogue.com,  requested by several magazines including Dazed&Confused and was retailed in a French gallery.

Graduated from the high standard womenswear pathway with a First in 2010, she was selected in the 6 upcoming talents of La Nuit De La Mode, was a finalist in the Triumph Inspiration Award and in the Podium Jeunes Stylistes competitions. She thrived and matured within great fashion houses such as Proenza Schouler and Narciso Rodriguez in New York, Kenzo and Jean Charles de Castelbajac in Paris, George Wu in Australia and freelanced for Mother of Pearl in London. She then joined Karl Lagerfeld on his namesake brand for a decade, working on the first line and on VIP dressing.

She now focuses on sustainable sur-mesure designs with her own brand Moïra Cristescu Paris. “Creating 100% upcycling is a challenge, but I want to contribute to the solution, not be part of the problem. It is also very fulfilling to create beauty from waste.” This brand specializes in custom-made outfits for singers, musicians, actresses, both for Red Carpet events and for music video/performance/films, and occasionally bridalwear.

Philosophy

Moïra Cristescu has created her brand driven by her convictions: it is based on sustainability as all materials are upcycled, mainly recovered from left-over stocks from luxury fashion houses. It is produced ethically and locally, in a Paris atelier. It also promotes female empowerment and body & age positivity.

Resonance

The idea of resonance intervened with the obsession for « Seven Months » from Portishead, resembling a bouncing sound. On the listener, on its body, defining it with vibrations. Lucien Clergue’s photographic work inspired the figurative representation of these waves. This graphic slicing was also envisioned in depth, as if carved out of the garment, evoking the layering of paperbark trees.

Podium Jeunes Stylistes Competition

This collection interprets the theme « clouds » of the 2011 PJS competition in a topographic way : drawing a map representing their volume and shades, as they envelop the body. Each layer is lined with a silver silk veil, illustrating the both positive and poetic saying « every cloud has a silver lining ».
